Commentary

Good luck being Rahul Dravid at this point. Today, the team’s reserve batter has scored a fifty, while the auxiliary pacer has picked up a fifer. When Rohit, Hardik and Kohli are away, the others come out to play…So how do you pick your best XI for the World Cup opener? Well, thankfully, the Indian management has two more ODIs to test out these boys, while Australia will hope for better next game as they sweat over the fitness of some of their regulars. Join us for the second ODI, for now this is Saurabh Shankar signing off on behalf of Akshay Maanay, Anurag Hegde and Vinod Kumar.

Mohammed Shami | Player of the Match: (On bowling longer spells in the heat) It depends on the captain and the game situation, but despite the heat you feel like bowling 4-5 overs with the new ball. I enjoyed the wicket of Marsh, that's a different feeling when you get the outside edge, when you control your swing nicely. It was important to hit the right lengths on this wicket, either at full pace or go slow, but bowling the right lengths were key. (On bowling with the other pacers) We've played together for a long time, so we know what needs to be done. Always enjoy when we bowl well in tandem like this.

KL Rahul: (On captaincy) Not the first time, always happens with me. I'm used to it, I love it. I think the intensity in the afternoon was great, after Colombo this felt like heaven in the start but it was really hot and humid. It gets tough and physically challenging, but we've all worked on our fitness and that's showing on the field. We only played five bowlers, so they had to bowl 10 overs. After Shubman got out, it was a bit tricky with the set batter out. But managed to build a good partnership with Surya, need to put myself in such challenging situations. (On partnership with Surya) We kept talking about hitting good cricket shots, rotating the strike and this is something all our batters are working on. We didn't want to get bogged down, we were always on par so we wanted to take it deep.

Pat Cummins: Personally, happy to be back. Good to get my first game in India. A few guys batted well, few guys bowled well but overall not good enough. (On injuries) They'd probably not be ready for the second game, maybe the third game. Maxi has just arrived in India. Smith's first hit as well, and Davey was brilliant. Good to see them out there together. We've got one eye on the big tournament, but you want to set the standards early and build a good rhythm.

Most 50-plus scores for India in an ODI run-chase
4 vs England, Indore, 2006
4 vs England, Cuttack, 2008
4 vs Australia, Mohali, 2023

- This is India’s second win against Australia in Mohali from six attempts (ODIs), the previous coming by 5 runs in November 1996.
- Before today, Australia had won six of the seven ODIs they had played at this venue, including the 1996 CWC SF against West Indies and ICC CT 2006 SF against New Zealand.
- Teams chasing have now won six of the seven ODIs in Mohali post the 2011 CWC.

Suryakumar Yadav: I was dreaming of this type of innings when I started playing this format. Trying to bat deep and finishing the game, unfortunately couldn’t do it today but very happy with the result. I’d been wondering what had been happening for me in this format, the teams and bowlers were the same. I went back and reflected and realized I was probably rushing things a bit so I decided to play slower and take it deep. I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep. This has come from the Chandu Pandit school of arts (on his straight drives). Really enjoyed watching the openers bat. Want to try and bat the same way, bat deep, try and win games for India.

21:44 Local Time, 16:14 GMT, 21:44 IST: The Mohali curse has been broken, India's first win over Australia at this venue since 1996. A fairly routine chase, as batting did get better in the second innings with the pitch flattening out. Shubman Gill was princely as ever, making the most of the powerplay with some eye catching strokeplay. He was fully supported by Ruturaj who took his time to get started, but motored along nicely. Both openers notched up fifties, but then Adam Zampa produced wickets off three successive overs, as he dismissed Gill and Rutu, while Iyer was run out. Things then were a bit nervy as Ishan Kishan was out trying to upper cut, but Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul steadied the ship. The former in particular showed great restraint, curbing his attacking instincts and playing some textbook shots to get India close to the finish line. He couldn't close out the job, but Rahul was assured at the other end as he played a captain's knock, notched up a fifty and scored the winning runs with 8 balls to spare. Over to the presentations now...

48.4 Abbott to Rahul, SIX, finishes off in style.... Showed restraint throughout the innings but so close to the finish line when he gets a slot ball on off, he slams it over mid-off and it lands all the way beyond the ropes for six. India win by 5 wickets.

23.4Zampa to Shreyas Iyer, out Shreyas Iyer Run Out!! Miscommunication and Iyer is gone. This is why he needs more game time; it is not only scoring runs but also communicating with his team mates. Slower through the air and Iyer eases it wide (left) of cover, sets off for a non-existent single and Gill does not respond, Iyer does not see that and is almost halfway down the pitch, Green swoops down and sends a bullet throw right next to the stumps, Josh Inglis does the rest. India missed a similar run-out while fielding but not Australia. Overall a forgettable outing for Iyer; dropped Warner early on, fumbled quite a few balls and now falls cheaply. Mohammad Shami: Very happy, enjoy the company of Siraj a lot. It’s important to bowl in the right areas and set the tone. Yes, it was hot out here. There wasn’t much out of the wicket so the only option was to bowl good lengths and mix-up your variations. Feels good when you put in the effort and get wickets, it’s good for the team and for your confidence.

India v Australia, 1st ODI, Mid-innings show

17:30 Local Time, 12:00 GMT, 17:30 IST: The visitors have managed 276 after the first innings and they'll have mixed feelings about that. They lost Mitch Marsh in the very first over, but then David Warner and Steve Smith stitched together a partnership. The southpaw was helped by a Shreyas Iyer drop catch, and notched up a fifty. He tried to attack the spinners, but holed out to long-on. Smith too got a start but a nip-backer from Shami was too good for him. Labuschagne was unlucky to be out stumped off a delivery that deflected off Rahul's pads onto the stumps. Everyone in the Aussie top-order got starts but couldn't build on it as India kept fighting back. Josh Inglis impressed with 45, but fell to a superb Bumrah slower ball. Then Shami returned to claim three wickets at the death to end with a fifer. This isn't a classic Mohali pitch, it is a bit two-paced. Watch out for dew in the second innings, let's see how things proceed...

AUS: 276-10 after 50 overs

39.3Shami to Green, out Green Run Out!! 1 run completed Oh dear!! Australia's batters have got themselves in a very avoidable mix-up. A slower length ball, Green advanced and got leg side but had to adjust himself and push at it. Gets an edge that falls to Rahul on the bounce, who lets it go through towards third-man. Green was adamant to get back for the second, and Inglis was guilty of ball watching a bit. The big Aussie almost ran the whole stride but had to turn back while the throw arrived. Shami faltered but Suryakumar was behind him and he back-handed it onto the stumps. India get a wicket out of nothing! Green run out (Ruturaj Gaikwad/Suryakumar Yadav) 31(52) [4s-3]

Right, so we are ready to continue. Clear blue skies with the sun peeping through now...

16:11 Local Time, 10:41 GMT, 16:11 IST: The covers are being taken off as quickly as they were brought on. For once, a passing shower stayed true to its name. We should be ready to start soon...

16:05 Local Time, 10:35 GMT, 16:05 IST: Oh dear.... Players are walking off the pitch and the covers are being hurried on. Doesn't look like it is raining at the moment but the umpires have probably spotted some scary clouds in the distance and taken suo motto action. From Colombo to Chandigarh, rain seems to be the only constant for Team India...

Josh Inglis, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Drinks are on the field now.. India have pulled it back nicely after the Warner-Smith partnership. The runs have been kept under check and they're picking up the odd wicket. Australia need 300 to challenge India

Ashvarya: The ground fielding from India has been quite sloppy in general. It seems more of a mental thing than skills as this has been primarily observed on "not so important" matches. Hope they work on this aspect as well before the WC starts.

32.4Ashwin to Labuschagne, out Stumped!! Tossed up and turning in, Labuschagne attempts the reverse sweep and gets it off the splice, the ball hits Rahul's pad and then ricochets onto the stumps. There's an umpire review for stumping. Looks like Labuschagne's boot is on the line as the stumps light up. The stump cam is being used and he does not have any part inside the crease. Lucky breakthrough for India as that was actually a catch which Rahul could not hold onto but fortunately the ball lands on the stumps, Labuschagne had a big stretch forward to play the sweep and his back leg was on the line. Labuschagne st Rahul b Ashwin 39(49) [4s-3]

Ashwin to Labuschagne, THATS OUT!! Stumped!!

32.3 Ashwin to Green, 1 run, too straight - on middle and leg, Green flicks to deep square leg

Nitin: Debate going on Thakur v Shami and here I am thinking how to rinse the butter off of Indian fielders' hands today.

31.4 Thakur to Labuschagne, no run, short of length outside off, Labuschagne punches it firmly to cover

AUS: 155-3 after 31 overs

30.6 Jadeja to Green, 1 run, tight single. Green knocks it towards cover and Labuschagne dives in to make his ground. A direct hit would have been interesting. The batters almost came in each other's way and that is why Labuschagne had to put in the dive

Ravichandran Ashwin is back into the attack

Karan Mishra: @Kushagra: Though Shami is more lethal with the ball, we need to give credit to Shardul for being a wicket-taker and also being much better with the bat. He will come in handy when the top order fails.

28.4 Jadeja to Labuschagne, 1 run, flighted on leg-stump, Labuschagne leans forward and works it to long-on

28.2 Jadeja to Labuschagne, FOUR, width on offer and Labuschagne cashes in, free his hands and drills the drive in front of square, beating Ash near sweeper

28.1 Jadeja to Labuschagne, no run, flatter and attacking the stumps, Labuschagne stabs it to cover

AUS: 137-3 after 28 overs

27.6 Bumrah to Green, no run, just the boundary off the first ball. 139.8ks delivery angled in, Green looks to dab it to third man but is cramped for room and beaten on the edge

Kushagra: It may be more beneficial to consider Shami over Thakur. Thakur may not be considered a pure all-rounder at this time. It may be wise to choose a genuine fast bowler with better pace and length. Additionally, Shami has the ability to swing his arms.

27.5 Bumrah to Green, no run, slower ball around off, Green had to check his block and sends it down the pitch

27.4 Bumrah to Green, no run, appeal for a strangle down leg by Bumrah, Rahul is not interested. Definite sound but it looked pad. Full and down leg, Green glances it fine and Rahul dives to his left to glove the ball, it didn't carry as well

25.5 Bumrah to Labuschagne, 2 runs, 136.8ks delivery angled in, Labuschagne tucks it past mid-wicket and SKY allows the ball to escape past him, concedes the extra run

25.4 Bumrah to Green, 1 run, 133.5ks good length ball and it straightens, Green squirts an outside edge to third man

Suresh Babu K: @Akash Raghav I disagree with that. Since ODI cricket (especially in India) evolved as a format that require fire power till the tail, it will be a tough call for the teams to include 3 genuine pacers. All-rounders are becoming an inevitable part of white ball cricket nowadays.

25.3 Bumrah to Green, no run, on a length and outside off, Green looks to steer it to third man and is beaten on the outside edge

24.5 Jadeja to Labuschagne, 1 run, fuller and drifting in, Labuschagne eases it down to long-on

Abhishek: @Amul, this world cup schedule is going to be a hectic one, it is better to rotate the fast bowlers throughout the tournament to keep them afresh

24.4 Jadeja to Labuschagne, 2 runs, fraction short and close to off, Labuschagne cuts behind square on the off-side and races back for the second

24.3 Jadeja to Labuschagne, no run, turn for Jadeja. Flighted fuller and Labuschagne is drawn into the drive, the ball spins away sharply to beat the outside edge and Rahul removes the bails quickly but Labuschagne's back leg never left/lifted

Stumping check referred upstairs but Rahul is not confident. Labuschagne seems to have his back foot inside the crease. They will check for a caught behind first, nothing on UltraEdge. Yes, the back foot is grounded. Not Out!

24.1 Jadeja to Labuschagne, 1 run, short and turning away, Labuschagne cuts to sweeper cover

23.6 Shami to Green, no run, nearly! Green was looking to direct it into the off-side and gets cramped by the nip-backer, chops it back and the ball didn't miss the off-stump by much

Akash Raghav: I think India needs go into the world cup with all Shami, Siraj & Bumrah. They all have wicket taking ability at any stage.

23.5 Shami to Labuschagne, 1 run, 132.9ks short of length outside off, Labuschagne opens the bat face and guides to third man

23.4 Shami to Green, 1 run, goes wide of the crease and angles it in, Green eases it in front of mid-on and quickly crosses over

23.3 Shami to Labuschagne, 1 run, 137.3ks good length ball close to off, Labuschagne steers to third man

23.2 Shami to Labuschagne, no run, 127.8ks short of length around off, Labuschagne knocks it to the off-side and looks for a non-existent single

Amul: Siraj vs Shami is going to be a tough selection battle during the World Cup. Cannot just keep Shami on the sidelines with his skill and experience.

23.1 Shami to Labuschagne, no run, 139.3ks full and still a bit of inward movement, Labuschagne pushes firmly back to Shami

AUS: 118-3 after 23 overs

22.2 Jadeja to Labuschagne, 1 run, tosses it up close to off, Labuschagne eases it to sweeper cover

22.1Jadeja to Labuschagne, no run, run out chance missed. Rahul is the culprit. Labuschagne lucky to be out there. Flighted around off, Labuschagne pushes it towards cover where SKY makes a half stop and that causes the confusion between the batters, Green never wanted the single and Labuschagne was more than a half way down, SKY sends a throw little wide of the stumps and Rahul fails to gather the ball. Labuschagne was miles down the wicket

AUS: 114-3 after 22 overs

21.6 Shami to Labuschagne, 1 run, 136.1ks delivery slanting in, Labuschagne flicks to deep square leg

21.4 Shami to Green, 1 run, full and nipping in, Green pushes it to mid-on and quickly gets off the mark

Cameron Green, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Adish Bansal: @Satish Meena. This may not necessarily be due to lack of interest. It may be due to extreme heat, working day and afternoon time. You ll see a lot more fans in as the day progresses and it cools down a bit.

21.3Shami to Smith, out Bowled!! Cleaned up! Shami comes back for his second spell and goes through Smith. This ball is still moving even though it is 21.3 overs old. India v Australia, 1st ODI, Pre-match show

Teams:

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis(w), Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Short, Pat Cummins(c), Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa

India (Playing XI): Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w/c), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami

Pat Cummins | Australia Captain: Good to be back, it's been a while since I’ve been back here. Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are not quite ready. Would’ve bowled first as well but don’t really mind. It’s nice and sunny out here. Warner and Marsh will open the batting. Smith, Marnus and Inglis to follow.

KL Rahul | India Captain: We’ll bowl first. Historically a good chasing ground, that’s about it. There are a few boxes that we need to tick and the boxes that we’ve ticked we need to keep doing it better. One more challenge, best team in the world so good to play against them. They are a very competitive team so we’ve enjoyed playing against them. It's always a great challenge.

India have won the toss and have opted to field

Pitch report by Murali Karthik and Brad Haddin: Mohali is a high-scoring ground, it’s going to be no different this time. Apart from hitting boundaries, it will also be important to find runs in the deep pockets. Team winning the toss will want to chase. It’s quite hard, very consistent and skiddy bounce. Batters who get into a good rhythm will enjoy batting here.

Akash Chopra on broadcast just mentioned that Siraj hasn't bowled at all in the warm-up, while Mo Shami has been bowling quite a bit. Similarly, R Ashwin seems to be bowling quite a bit while Washington Sundar hasn't stretched his arms out much.

For Australia, this is pretty much the perfect practice for an Indian World Cup. Three games in three very different kinds of pitches and conditions that will give a hang of what to expect for the next month and a half. The problem for them is half their squad has been at a doctors waiting room in the last month, and some have probably still not attained full fitness. Therefore, finding the right balance between giving their players game time and avoiding further injuries will be critical, particularly with talismanic fast bowlers who are falling like flies so close to the World Cup. They were shocked by South Africa who came from being two games down to win a series 3-2, so they'd be looking to make some amends with a much more experienced bowling line-up this time around. It's a sultry afternoon in Mohali which has generally produced some pristine batting decks. Let's see what today has to offer...

12:31 PM Local Time: A couple of weeks back, news broke out that selection to the Indian football team was being made after consulting an astrologer. Wonder if the BCCI has been taking a leaf out of that book because the squad for this India Australia series has sprung up a few surprises, as most of the regulars have been rested for the first two games. Nevertheless, it has brightened the fortunes of the likes of Ravi Ashwin and Washington Sundar who suddenly find themselves in the fray for a World Cup spot after being largely out in the wilderness. With just three games left for experiments, this is the final dress rehearsal for not only the Tamil Nadu duo, but also the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma who are all in a potential straight shoot out for that elusive number 4 spot.

Preview: India v Australia, ODI series
Preview:

On paper, this is a brilliant prospect. India playing Australia in conditions where the World Cup is set to be played in two weeks. Both have well-rounded teams, seem to possess an extra gear for big tournaments, and spur each other on like few other teams can. So, this opportunity to go up against each other before the World Cup showdown in Chennai is worth its weight in gold, but look closer and the series feels like a surplus in a very crowded international calendar.

No wonder Pat Cummins, addressing the media ahead of the series opener, spoke of not wanting to "already be cooked" for the World Cup. And that's what the signalling has been from India too; the hosts have decided to catch a breath after a rainy yet rigorous campaign at the Asia Cup and will be, as a result, without several first-choice players for the first two ODIs. Regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been rested alongside Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav, whom India "don't want to expose a lot" ahead of the World Cup, according to captain Rohit Sharma. So the onus will be on Australia to take what they can out of this series.

India, even without the full World Cup squad at their disposal, look strong and have a few questions to answer. Can KL Rahul finally get on a roll with good form behind him? Can Suryakumar Yadav crack the ODI format, especially with Tilak Verma breathing down his neck? Can Ravindra Jadeja, India's second all-rounder, find a way to get back among the runs? And can Ravichandran Ashwin be the saviour again if India's condition-dictated bowling allrounder in Axar Patel, doesn't make it in time? And don't forget Shreyas Iyer, who missed most of the Asia Cup with a back spasm, but is likely to audition for his form and fitness in the three ODIs that follow.

On the other hand, Australia will be licking their lips at playing India in India before a World Cup; there's perhaps no better preparation. They will be bolstered by the return of Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell, whose experience they missed in the 3-2 loss to South Africa that they succumbed to after being 2-0 up in the series.

This series will also be about life without Travis Head, whose fractured left hand has made him an unlikely candidate for the World Cup. His absence, though, would mean that Mitchell Marsh returns to open the innings, a position he had given up (as stand-in captain) for the returning David Warner. However, as fate would have it, he's all set to partner Warner up top come Friday, and come the World Cup.

It's perfect that the teams have the first knockout in Mohali, the setting for many a heart-stopper between the sides. The venue, having missed out on hosting the World Cup, will be looking forward to this contest with extra sincerity and emotion. Luckily for them, India vs Australia seldom disappoints, and never in Mohali.

When: India vs Australia, 1st ODI on Friday, 22 September 2023, 1:30 PM local

Where: Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali

What to expect: A lot of runs. Mohali hasn't hosted an ODI in over four years but expect a flat pitch like you find here for more regular T20 cricket. The longer square boundaries should again add a tactical dimension to the cricket on display. In the last five ODIs here, pacers (43) have picked more wickets than the spinners (22) but have also been less economical. The weather is set to be warm with clear skies.

India

Axar Patel is unavailable at the moment and Kuldeep Yadav has been rested, so Ravichandran Ashwin should slot in straightaway. Ishan Kishan, who India see as a spin-hitter in the middle overs, is also a back-up opener and is likely to partner Gill at the top. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami are all available for the three ODIs but expect the first two pacers to feature in Mohali.

Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (c, wk), Tilak Varma/Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Australia

Yet another well-directed bouncer has meant that Marnus Labuschagne, who was left out of the World Cup squad, is back in the scheme of things. Glenn Maxwell, who missed the ODI series against South Africa with an ankle injury, will be rested in Mohali in view of a "more managed preparation" for him in the leadup to the World Cup. Australia captain Pat Cummins also confirmed that Mitchell Starc won't feature in the first ODI. The team management will have an eye on Adam Zampa, who has been a mixed bag in India so far.

Probable XI: David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Pat Cummins (c), Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa
